Cornwall / Kernow (there's also a short article - in MS Word - about Cornish/Kernewek and place-names in Cornwall/Kernow)
Sowena
(Cheers! ... best with a glass of something)
The flag of St
Piran, the patron saint of tinners, and one of Cornwall's three patron saints
(the others are St Petroc and St Michael). St Piran's flag has been
adopted as the flag of Cornwall, and flies outside County Hall (along with the
flags of the UK and the EU) and many other places.
CSM's virtual museum - The Cornubian Orefield - launched in October 2003 - with lots of images of Cornish minerals and rocks, maps of Cornwall's geology, virtual fieldtrips, historic photos ..... but please remember that CSM (Camborne School of Mines - now part of Exeter University and based on the new Tremough Campus near Penryn) has an international reputation! It may have started as a little local mining school in the nineteenth century, but since then Cornish miners, engineers and geologists have taken their skills all over the world. "At the bottom of every hole you'll find a Cornishman!" "Cornubia" is a term for Cornwall and west Devon.
CSM (Camborne School of Mines) .. please see above! Courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level in many environmental fields, including geology, renewable energy, environmental science & technology, mineral processing and mining engineering. And CSM is now in the brand-new building on the Tremough Campus of the Combined Universities in Cornwall, outside Penryn, next to Falmouth College of Art.
Sense of Place A curriculum project for delivering material about Cornwall to school pupils in Cornwall. You can download and use materials free. And there's more being developed.
An Daras A new site for Cornwall's folk arts - music, dance, costume, etc. Cornish culture. Developing all the time!
Cornwall Wildlife Trust - the Wildlife Trust's activities range from conserving geological sites to otters, whales and dolphins, bats and, of course, biodiversity. The Trust must be one of the most holistic in the country - but then Cornwall's natural environment is special! The Trust helped fund the reprint of my Bodmin Moor booklet and will send you a free copy (send an sae), or you can download it as a pdf (less than 1.5 Mb) in English, French, German, Spanish or Dutch. You can also download much about Cornwall's wildlife, identification charts, distribution maps of mammals, etc.
Cornish Mining Landscape - this is the website for the 'Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape' World Heritage Site. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) designates World Heritage Sites.
South West Coast Path 1014 km of walking - Britain's longest National Trail - and nearly half of it is in Cornwall! As well as the official SWCP website, there's also the SWCP Association's website. (And if you want a guide, please ask me! I wrote one of the four official guidebooks, wrote the introduction for all new editions of all four, and have led various American and local groups along parts of it.) 2003 was celebrated as the Path's 25th birthday: guided walks, music, art, even a train painted with pictures of the coast (my idea!).
Eden Project - the most successful Millennium Commission big project, at least as far as numbers of visitors go. Two biomes in a disused claypit, plus lots more to see. Buy your tickets before you get there, and go by bus (from St Austell station, Newquay, Bodmin, etc) to beat the queues for parking and the queues for tickets. TICs - that's Tourist Information Centres - (e.g. St Austell TIC ) sell tickets, and can fix you up with accommodation locally.
VisitCornwall (formerly known as Cornwall Tourist Board). Each area in Cornwall has its own tourism website e.g. follow the tourism link from Caradon's site (which has downloadable info about beaches with summertime dog-bans).
Cornwall County Council - this may not sound too exciting but dig around and you'll find lots of interesting content about Cornwall.
Cornwall AONB - Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - includes much of the coast, Bodmin Moor and other bits. The Isles of Scilly has its own IoS AONB, as does the Tamar Valley: the Tamar Valley AONB is shared with Devon..
Bodmin Moor website, run as a service by an enthusiastic farmer, Dominic Fairman, who has an organic farm, and campsite, at South Penquite, near Blisland. (Bring your own tent - or hire a yurt!)
Cornish Language Partnership The new site with links to lots of things Kernewek. (Want to ask: "Does my bum look big in this?" in Cornish? This site tells you how, four times).
Cornish language Learn a little Cornish / Kernewek. And find out about those place-names!
China Clay Country Park - the museum of the clay industry at Wheal Martyn near St Austell. Inside and outside exhibits, and a stunning overlook into a working claypit.
Cornwall's Archaeological Heritage - an A2M site (access to monuments) - pictures, etc, of 50 sites with a promise of more to come
& finally two artists working in Cornwall:
Bren Unwin - a painter-printmaker
Jenny Beavan - a ceramicist
